The sexual response experienced throughout the world is sexual desire. Although research on the topic has increased in recent years, the distinction between low and high desires in clinical settings and in the broader culture remains challenging. However, despite the knowledge that sexual desire decreases and spreads both within and between individuals, and that sexual desire problems are strongly linked to problems in relationships, there is a significant gap in understanding the factors that drive sexual desire and help maintain it. Relationships this article provides a systematic review of the literature to provide researchers, educators, clinicians, and the general public with an overview and conceptual model of companionable sexual desire in long-term relationships. First, we systematically identified peer-reviewed English-language articles that focused on maintenance of sexual desire in the context of nonreligious romantic relationships. Second, we reviewed a total of 64 people that met the inclusion criteria and synthesized them into factors using a socio-ecological framework classified as personal, interpersonal, and social in nature.
